Changing Career

Thinking of changing your career? It can be a daunting time, and when you are venturing into the unknown it is nice to have someone to talk things through with. At Prs we are here for you every step of the way. Below are some helpful pieces of advice to think about before making that all important decision.

1. Network: Identify any people you may already know doing the job you would like and contact them to ask for advice. This is also a great way of potentially getting work experience offers ... seize these and work your hardest!
2. Identify transferable skills: You will have many skills that you can use in another career, even if you don''t immediately recognise them. For example; if you are a busy parent, your organisational skills will be well honed and invaluable to an employer. Likewise, if you are applying for your first job after University, you will find that your time management and research skills will be highly attractive to a prospective employer.
3. Break it down into steps: Changing career can seem like a huge step, so break it down into bitesize steps. Start by writing a list of tasks such as:
   • Identify the skills that employers will look for
   • Identify potential courses that may help your development
   • Update your CV - focus on particular achievements and responsibilities which demonstrate your transferable skills
   • Practise your interview skills - make sure you are knowledgeable about the field you are hoping to enter and are armed with insightful questions to ask. The internet and trade journals can be a great starting place.
4. Don't lose heart: Prepare yourself for the possibility of some rejection but keep searching and applying for the jobs you want.
